1. Stage I of the National Perinatology Program “Strengthening medical perinatal care in the Republic of Moldova” (1998-2002)
The main achievements were: a) elaboration of the National Policy in Perinatal Care; b) creation of a regionalized system organized in three levels: one center of the 3rd level, ten centers of the 2nd level, and 26 maternity units of the 1st level; c) elaboration of 79 evidence based protocols in obstetrics, neonatology, and family medicine; d) strengthening human capacity of family doctors, obstetricians, neonatologists, midwives, nurses, and managers of the perinatal system in essential care in pregnancy, delivery & post-partum, newborn’s care, and total quality management - BABIES matrix; e) creation of a monitoring system of perinatal health, evaluation of quality of provided services in maternity units and primary health care facilities. 2. Projects sustained by the Japan Government (1999-2000)
equipping third and second level perinatal centers from the 1st and 2nd Japanese Grants. Project cost 8,5 mln. USD
3. Emergency statuses in newborns Project (2002-2003)
supported by Agence Universitaire de Francophonie (AUF). The project aimed to teach the medical personnel in neonatology through international exchange of experience, in partnership with the Paris-South University (France) and the University of Montreal (Canada). Project cost 13.370,0 Euro
4. Strengthening the role of APM in developing clinical guidelines Project (2004-2005)
implemented in partnership SIGN, UK. The main objective was to strengthen the role of APM in the accreditation of the medical personnel in involving the members of the society in the elaboration of the EBM clinical guidelines. Project cost 10.000 USD, financed by SOROS
5. Estimation of the obstetrical and neonatal package cost from maternity units of different level as part of the regionalized perinatology service Project (2005)
aimed to estimate the essential services cost and the differentiated one, on the basic obstetrical and neonatal disease depending on the level of offering perinatal care. Project cost 15.000 USD, supported by UNICEF Office in Moldova
6. Strengthening APM capacity in the auditing perinatal deaths Project (2005-2006)
7. The 2nd Stage of the National Perinatology Program ”Promoting medical qualitative perinatal services” (2003-2007)
supported by UNICEF and SDC Offices in Moldova. The main achievements are: a) national policy in perinatal care were reviewed in 2006, b) continuous training of the medical staff involved in perinatal care, in particular, family doctors and nurses from the primary health care facilities, c) protocols from the 1st stage elaborated were reviewed and 84 new protocols were elaborated; d) issues the National Campaign of Communication in the area of Health of the Future Mother “For a beautiful and healthy child” was successfully implemented in order to involve families and community in solving of health. The National Campaign is carried out at the moment, being dedicated to the health of the mother and child in the first year of life. Project cost 700.000 USD
8. Modernizing perinatology system in Moldova project (2006-2007)
is implemented in partnership with the Swiss Centre for International Health, Swiss Tropical Institute from Basel, Switzerland. The main achievements are: a) the endowment of 26 maternities of the 1st levelwith care and emergency equipment and the endowment of the RIMCHC – IIIrd level – and 2 level IInd centers with high technology; b) elaboration of 18 clinical protocols dedicated to the care of the sick newborn and the use of the high technology (respiratory support techniques, diagnostic of neurological disorders, the implementation of the Bailey method for the neonatal follow-up; c) creation of the Diagnostic Center for the complications of the cerebral injuries and the Neonatal Follow-up; d) carrying out a Study on neurological disorders of premature with LBW and VLBW and Follow up of premature newborns. The project is financed by SDC. Project cost 500.000 USD

At the moment we are running the following projects
1. Modernizing perinatology system in Moldova project (2008-2011) Implemented in partnership with the Swiss Centre for International Health, Swiss Tropical Institute from Basel, Switzerland.
The second phase of the Moldova Swiss Perinatology Project incorporates the recommendation of the external review. Methodological foci are the continuation of its capacity building activities in the area of labour management, neonatal care, follow up of post NICU newborns and management skills including Health Technology Management and the principles of Quality Management in Health. It will increase the functionality of the regional health system by strengthening the level II maternities and their capacity to care for critical newborns. With its promotional and preventive activities it will address needs directly at the community and primary care level. The new project phase will continue to strengthen communication skills and methods amongst health professionals through modern communication techniques including Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
Project Objective: Improved access and availability of high quality perinatal services at all levels
Key indicators to measure the achievement of the project:
- Survival of premature babies (up to 1000g and between 1000g and 1500g)
- Percentage of women at delivery with completed pre-natal care
- Percentage of 1500g to 2500g newborns treated at level 2 centres

2. FIGO Safe Motherhood & Newborn Health Project in Moldova “Beyond the Numbers: implementation of new approaches of reviewing perinatal deaths” (2006-2010)
financed by FIGO in collaboration with RCOG and RCM, UK. Mentors of the project - Prof. S. Bergstrom, Karolinska Institute, Sweden, and Prof. J. Gardosi, Perinatology Institute, Birmingham, UK. The project aims to improve the quality of perinatal care by implementing the perinatal audit based on a participatory, no blame, confidential and evidence-based approaches. As part of the project, the methodology and the tools for the performing of the Confidential Enquiry for perinatal deaths amongst children with a gestation age ≥ 37 weeks and a birth weight ≥ 2500 g at national level were elaborated, the medical staff from the maternities of the country was trained in using the new approaches.
